Bass Intensive
Thursday November 7, 2024 9:00am - 3:30pm PST
I'm excited for this RARE opportunity to spend some concentrated time with a smaller group of bass players.  Bring your bass!  No pressure, no worries...and lots of "aha moments"!  :^)
I hope you'll join me. Blessings- Norm

Here's what we'll cover...

Groove & The Worship Bassist

An interactive, 2-hour intensive for bass players interested in developing their groove abilities! Topics covered will include warm-ups, fingerboard familiarity, essential ear-training, calibrating your internal clock, effective bass/drum interaction, the critical subtleties (playing on top, spot on, or laying back), rhythm chart basics and much more. This class will establish a foundation and context for subsequent bass classes this afternoon.

Developing a Vocabulary of Musical Styles
Whether called upon to play a particular genre of music authentically, or just seeking ways to freshen up your lines, a working vocabulary of various musical styles is invaluable for bass players. It’s important to be familiar with the idioms - some of the technical things that make a style of music sound that way (i.e., "what makes funk...funky?"). We’ll explore the rhythmic, harmonic and sonic idioms of a handful of different genres.

From Pyrotechnics to Art: Modern Bass Technique
The basic mechanics & practice methods for many popular techniques (slapping, tapping, chording, artificial harmonics, etc.) will be covered....as well as (and most IMPORTANTLY!) ways in which these techniques can be incorporated in a musically subtle and artistic manner!

Bass Gear Talk / Q & A
Norm's thoughts and suggestions regarding the broad range of considerations and factors pertaining to selecting the right bass, amp, speakers, strings and/or effects. Additionally, an open Q & A time: Frustrated trying to learn the slap technique? Need tips for hearing yourself better onstage? We'll focus on everything from the technical to musical to spiritual!

Audio Intensive
Thursday November 7, 2024 9:00am - 3:30pm PST
Our plan for the day...
We will spend an hour on proper gain structure and ecosystem configuration, that is, how to set up consoles, stage-boxes, and peripheries.
We will follow this portion up with an overview of acoustics and how it plays into the mix.
That takes us to lunch.
After lunch, we will delve into the two hour house versus online mix class and end with an overview of monitor mixing techniques.

Keynote - "Get Up! - Strengthening Yourself in the Lord"
Friday November 8, 2024 9:30am - 10:00am PST
As music ministers, we serve our church communities. We can only give what we already have received. As we lead people into the presence of Jesus, we must first be filled with His presence. A problem is that Jesus says that we will experience tribulation, distress and suffering. Then He tells us to be courageous, confident, and filled with joy because He has overcome the world. Like King David, we must learn how to strengthen ourselves in the Lord. Let’s talk about how to be encouraged and spiritually energized with power through His Spirit.

Sound Systems for the Portable and Small Church
Friday November 8, 2024 4:00pm - 5:00pm PST
Many of our churches meet in rented spaces, including mine. The faster the gear
can be set-up and taken down is a huge advantage in this environment. Our
church for example is charged additionally every hour that goes by after our time
is up. We also don’t want to tie up the volunteers ’day.
This class will illustrate how easy systems can be to set up and operate, even by
volunteers with little to modest levels of skills. We will demonstrate the scalability
of these systems so that as the church grows , the systems capabilities can grow
right along with it. We will talk about loudspeakers, audio mixers for the
sanctuary and the stage and why you would want to consider digital technology
for these applications: presets and recall, which will facilitate fast and repeatable
set up and operation.
